McKenzie Method (MDT)

The McKenzie Method (MDT) is a clinical system used to assess and treat spine-related pain

A clinically guided, movement-based system that identifies and treats mechanical spine conditions with precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

The McKenzie Method is a mechanical assessment and treatment system that identifies specific repeated movements that reduce pain, restore mobility, and improve spinal function.

  • Low back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Sciatica or radiating symptoms

  • Disc bulge or herniation

  • Mechanical joint dysfunction

  • Postural syndromes

The McKenzie Method (MDT) works by identifying how your symptoms respond to specific, repeated movements and positions.

Through a structured mechanical assessment, we determine your directional preference—the movement direction that reduces pain, improves mobility, or centralizes symptoms.

Once identified, targeted movements are used to:

  • Reduce mechanical stress on the spine

  • Improve joint and disc mechanics

  • Decrease nerve irritation

  • Promote long-term symptom control

This allows treatment to be precise, repeatable, and guided by your response, rather than generalized exercises or passive care.

It is the specific direction of movement that reduces pain or improves mobility.
Once identified, this movement becomes the basis of your exercise treatment.

The Repex Table is a repetitive motion therapy table developed from McKenzie principles.
It delivers controlled, repeated spinal flexion or extension without requiring the patient to move actively.

Repex allows patients to perform high-repetition, low-load movements—the core of MDT—safely and consistently.
This increases mechanical change and symptom improvement more quickly.

  • Patients in acute pain who cannot move easily

  • Disc bulge or herniation

  • Sciatica and nerve root irritation

  • Stiffness or reduced mobility

  • Older adults or patients with limited strength

It provides the therapeutic movement without strain or compensation.

Repeated extension or flexion can:

  • Reduce disc pressure

  • Improve disc hydration

  • Relieve nerve irritation

  • Restore joint mechanics

  • Centralize symptoms

These are core goals of the McKenzie Method.

Most patients feel gentle, rhythmic spinal movement within a comfortable range.
The motion is smooth, controlled, and adjustable for speed, range, and repetition count.

Many patients experience improvement within 1–3 sessions, especially when a clear directional preference exists.
Chronic or complex cases may require more sessions, but combining MDT with Repex often accelerates progress.
